THIS LECTURE'S TOPIC: Czech Modernism - Karel Čapek’s “War with the Newts”

In the final lecture of the semester, I will talk about Modernism in Czech context. I will first try to explain the complexity and various faces of “modernismus” and how it is reflected in terms of society, art, literature, architecture, interior design… My main focus will be on the Čapek brothers, who were very active both on the visual art as well as literary scenes. We will be reading Karel Čapek’s “War with the Newts” (1936) and I will try to illuminate its main themes and explain what makes it a fine example of political satire and a reflection of the state of the world in 1935. Besides the “War with the Newts”, I will tell you about their other works, such as their children literature and travel writing.
